Ugh, I completely agree with you. Even though I'm going to miss Gourmet, it was far from perfect. In fact, I found it a little too heavy on the food porn and not heavy enough on relevant articles. Also, it's recipes got less and less realistic as the magazine went on it seemed.

I do like Taste of Home, but it tends to rely too heavily on canned and processed foods and is too home-maker-y for me (not to mention the outrageous price). All I want is a food magazine that combines down home American cooking with the slightly more refined tastes of rustic European cooking. Is that so much to ask for? Apparently, yes. *sigh* Ah well. Someday, someday...

I love my potato scrubbing gloves! JK ;) Glad to know somelse has the same love/horror of the WS catalog as I do. They do have the best cookie sheets I have ever used (and I have used plenty) and apparently have a pretty awesome warranty on their products.

LOVE LOVE LOVE Big John's!

I found out about them through a cooking group I belong to, and try and go as often as I can justify it. Pickled shallots? Check! Organic farro? Check! Delicious pasta? Check! Liters of Spanish olive oil? Check! Yerba mate Taragui? Check!

And the cheese, oh, the cheese!!!

Great post!

Enjoy your blog! I'll be at the Foodbuzz/VISA dinner at Springhill tonight, that's how I found you. Have you had a chance to visit Mashiko yet? My husband and I went Saturday and it was incredible. Just posted about it.

[...] Mentors. They’re really hard to find and when you finally gain one, hold on tight. Any mentor will tell you that it takes hard work to see the results. But it is sure nice to look back and realize how far you’ve come. So when I asked Angie Sorenson of Lambs Ear Shoes about the inspirations behind the opening of her store, it’s not surprising that she mentioned her mentor Becky Buford of Les Amis and Essenza in Fremont. And the more I hear about Becky, the more she resembles a retail savvy version Tom Douglas, unofficially noted for Tom Douglas University. [...]
